Mobile Site Algorithm Changes

Were You Prepared for Mobilegeddon?

Google makes about 1,000 changes to their Search Engine Optimization (SEO) algorithm per year! In almost all cases, the changes happen, and all the SEO guys of the world try and figure out what those changes are and their impact on organic rankings. However, in 2015, Google reached out to us to let us know in advance of a huge upcoming algorithm change. They told us:

Make sure your clients sites are mobile friendly. We want those sites to load properly on mobile devices. Here’s a tool that you can use to help test sites: https://search.google.com/test/mobile-friendly

We were really surprised. They told us about a big change in advance. That was the first time that had ever happened to me (and I’ve been a full-time SEO guy since 2003! This algorithm change was so big that it earned the nickname “Mobilegeddon” since it had the power to kill mobile sites from showing up in Google’s mobile search results.

In June 2018, it happened again. They told us of an SEO change in advance.

The July 2018 Mobile Site Speed Penalty

We had a lady from Google at our office to discuss some PPC things in June 2018. We spent quite a bit of time with her. We were showing her the rooms at our office that are designed like some Google rooms. She stopped and said “Wait, you guys do SEO too, right?”

Yeah, we do lots and lots of SEO work for our clients. What’s going on?

“Well, in July 2018, Google is going to be introducing a big Mobile Site Speed Penalty.”

This one is really big. Our team is testing our client sites . There are lots of strategies we have already implemented that can help some sites. In some cases, there might be additional work that should be done. If you have questions, talk to your Sebo contact.
