Link Building, also known as off-page SEO, refers to creating links from other sites that point back to your site. Years ago, any link coming to your site provided value. Unfortunately, many people made tools that provided irrelevant links to their sites; thus, the search engines learned that these unrelated links didn’t help. Now, the search engines tell us that the following factors are critical in the popularity component:
- The incoming link must be related to your site
- The incoming link should be coming from a popular site to provide value
- The incoming link should be in clean HTML code so that the link is easy for the search engine spider to follow
Google Penguin
In April 2012, Google made a pretty significant change to their algorithm that determines which sites show up near the top. That algorithm update was called Google Penguin.
The summary of Google Penguin was to prevent websites benefiting from poor quality or unnatural links being used by some webmasters. Penguin has gone through multiple updates, including the latest of Penguin 4.0 in late 2016. Sebo has tracked these updates very carefully, and has been very successful navigating through these changes, especially with link building.
Google PageRank
Google PageRank is an overall summary of the number and quality of links that point back to your website. Each link is like a popularity vote of your website. Some links are of higher quality and are therefore more valuable than other links.
